Monday Night Sucked

Monday Night Sucked I promise, theres a point to this Read on I dont know how else to say it. I was absolutely miserable on Monday night. I made one poor choice (a more experienced road warrior would not have made that choice and Ill never do it again), and it led to a very late night, cash out-of-pocket, hours driving around Orlando, and lots of stress. Instead of getting to my hotel early, with plenty of time to relax and prepare for Tuesday, I finally got to bed at 1am. Thats only 11am my time (Utah is MST, two hours behind Florida), so that wasnt a huge deal. But my presentation the next morning started at 9am which is 7am MST! Ugh! Around 8:30pm, I was pretty ticked (and all the other emotions that go along with it). I was outside of an Alamo rental branch that was closed. I got there at 8:05, just five minutes after it closed. Fortunately, there were two Alamo employees there boy was I glad to see them! Unfortunately, they were only there to tell me it was closed, and to catch a cab to the airport. ARGH! So Im standing outside of Alamo, with my laptop (low battery, since I used it on the airplane) on, hoping to get some information I needed to salvage the night. In my stressed misery (I should mention, the night before I didnt sleep well, and I didnt have much to eat all day I know my bad!), in the dark, at a remote Alamo branch I started to think of my last trip to Orlando. What great times! I was with a good friend from my last company (Cory) and we were representing our company at a trade show! It was a low-budget operation, but Cory and I had good times and I longed for those good times. At least, I wished, I could have a friend with me that night I felt pretty dang lonely, standing there by the garbage can. And then I realized something. That trip had its misery moments, too. Getting to Orlando that night we found out that there was only one hotel room that was smoking (I am sensitive to that and get sick in a smoking room) with one bed (um, me and Cory werent going to share a single bed). We ended up driving about 30 miles that night and getting in really, really late. Why is it that I always long for something in the past and dont appreciate the present? Is it just me, or is this human nature? Im going to work on that this year. Enjoy the moment, cherish the memories. And get over the petty things that really really dont matter. Do You Use Suzy Welch’s 10-10-10 Rule I was reading Glamour magazine this weekend and came across an article about Suzy Welchs 10-10-10 rule. This simple and applicable way of thinking about decisions is one that many of us will find useful. Suzy suggests that with every complicated decision you make, you should consider how it will affect your life in 10 minutes, 10 months and 10 years. If there is one thing that holds women back from success in their careers and relationships, Id say it is being indecisive. I am no exception. I used to struggle with decision-making so much that deciding what to order for dinner was a mini-crisis. If you struggle with making decisions, or have a huge decision looming on the horizon, try this strategy. For example, perhaps you are considering changing fields from business to something a bit more creative that you are passionate about. In 10 minutes, you might get a pay cut. In 10 months, you will be buzzing about the awesome new projects you get to work on. In 10 years, you will be so happy you took the leap and pursued something you loved which you also happen to rock at. And you will most likely have forgotten about the pay cut you had to take 10 years ago too. So, howâ€"during the interviewâ€"can a candidate seem to fit into the company’s culture? Similar to the cliché that says, “A leopard cant change its spots,” a person cant radically change personality. But because the outcome of the interview is highly influenced by a candidate’s cultural fit, the candidate can at least attempt to make the right impression, which amounts to simply the same thing as adjusting the words in the résumé to match the job requirements stipulated in the job ad. People may have different understandings of what lies behind the proverbial cultural fit. The most accepted notion suggests that cultural fit includes the display of characteristics related to organizational culture, such as values, language, and outlook. Culture is the behavior that results when the members of a group arrive at a set of rules for working together. The rules may include elements of decision making, daily work practices, and even such things as the office setup. For instance, some organizations are hierarchicalâ€"with office spaces and sizes linearly matching employees’ functions in the organization. At the other end of that spectrum are organizations that are very egalitarianâ€"with open-architecture office space, in which all employees having equally open and equally sized spaces. Before the interview, the candidate should explore with as many people as possible inside the company certain issues, such as: * Whether the work environment is highly stressful or rather relaxed * Whether promotion is from within or fresh experts are hired from outside * Frequency of meetings * Volume and tone of internal e-mails (formal or informal, friendly or abrasive?) * Whether teamwork or individual effort is the typical means of problem resolution * Whether employees’ opinions are solicited or not * How well poor behavior and underperformance are tolerated * Whether successes are celebrated and in what ways The list is endless, but those are a few examples of issues pertinent to company culture.

I was invited to a presentation to a group of talented design students. The purpose of this presentation was to convey the parallels between marketing a product and marketing themselves. In short, before a product launch, theres lots of research conducted about the target potential user/buyer. Then this information is used to craft the marketing messaging and methods for reaching the potential user. Theres a lot of thought that goes into all of this. Job seekers would benefit from using the same strategies to launch themselves during job search and it starts by gathering data- informational meetings. What Is An Informational Meeting? An informational meeting is a conversation to learn about a person, their role, the organization and/or the industry. Resumes = Junk Mail I am always dismayed when I hear people focus on the resume and cover letter as a means of creating interest. What is the success rate of sending spam or direct mail? 0-3%. Cold calls are scary and require thick skin, but you know, sometimes they work. You could ask everyone you know if they know someone who works in that target company. You could use LinkedIn to see if you have any contacts or to at least gather some names. You could Google the company and see whos been mentioned lately and reach out and congratulate them. You could try and find them on Twitter. You could do a lot of things. Your next question is: How Do I Ask For A Meeting Though you may be in job search, you are primarily in information gathering mode. You need to learn about what the company or department goals are. You want to learn about the culture, you want to know what their problems or concerns are so that you can be a solution. When you are requesting such a meeting (with companies who are not currently hiring) your request may sound something like: Ive recently worked on a project creating infographics and would like to talk with you about how your company is using them and where you see this concept heading in the future. I have been following what your company is doing and am really interested in how you are making strides to better inform and communicate with your customers. Would you have time to meet with me? Im completing my degree in Design in the Spring and would really love to learn more about the clients you serve and the services they are requesting. All of these requests work best if you could actually drop a name as you introduce yourself. I was talking with Spongebob yesterday about my design career and he suggested your name as someone who could offer really valuable advice because of your experience. Be Proactive The key to your success is identifying companies in advance of their advertising a position. Once theyve announced a job, theyll be overwhelmed with the process and might be less likely to agree to an informational meeting, though it never hurts to try. Now go back and create a list of 40 or so companies you believe would have a need for the kind of work you do. Begin doing some preliminary research and see who you can find who works there. What I Wish For You - When I Grow Up When I Grow Up Print by Stephanie Corfee I used to be an optimistic pessimist/pessimistic optimist, hoping for the best but expecting the worse (thanks, theater background!). Now, because of what Ive experienced personally and what Ive worked on with my clients over the past 5-ish years (!), I believe that its not a matter of can but a matter of how (my clients + I have never not found the how after weve discovered the what). that your tribe people that not only support you, but understand you is out there, ready to be found (pssssttheyre waiting for you with open arms). that the main roadblock between you and your passionate, grown-up career is the belief that you can actually make it happen. (Once you can see that it really is possible, the walls start crumbling down guaranteed) that one foot in front of the other, little by little, day by day builds a near-unbreakable foundation (challenge: commit to 15 minutes/day on your work and see what happens after 2 weeks. Life-changing.) that discovering what you wanna do when you grow up takes time, exploration, play, and extreme self-kindness (rush the process/beat yourself up and live with the consequences) the the thing you do so well, that comes so naturally, that you immediately discount because its too easyis exactly The Thing youve been seeking (own it and watch the doors start opening). that in The Age of Endless Possibilities, the only wrong choice is to make no choice at all. (make one tiny-step choice today and experiment/adjust along the way) that anyone who tells you that you cant make a living as a rock star-cowgirl-tap dancer-princess-school bus driver-cupcake sprinkler is dead wrong (no disrespect, but its absolutely true). that if we start thinking of our careers as Ands instead of Ors, the greatest shift ever on the planet is going to occur (what would happen if you tossed out your shoulds, your rules, your cants?) that the feeling of equal nerves/excitement is exactly what you need to be seeking (it pretty much guarantees that youre on the Right Path, no matter the outcome). that Following Your Bliss does not have to bring you back to your broke-college-student, Ramen-eating, living-in-your-parents-basement life (yes, I know grown-ups who are full-time artists and support their family in the process). that being a gatekeeper with what you want to do/who you want to work with is key to creating your dream business (spoiler alert: pro-actively keeping The Wrong People out conversely means that youre attracting your Right People directly to you). that your uniquity means so.much.more than you give it credit for (I dont care if other people play the ukulele its your combination of skills, strengths, and passions that make you a snowflake). that what I wish, more than anything, is for you to believe this all, too.
